Our History

Belmont Academy's story began in 2009 with a revolutionary idea that would challenge Jamaica's traditional educational landscape. As part of the government's ambitious Centre of Excellence programme, this J$300 million investment in Bluefields, Westmoreland, represented more than just a new school—it embodied a bold experiment to democratize educational excellence and prove that outstanding results could be achieved regardless of students' starting points. When the school first opened its doors in September 2009, it welcomed just over 200 students in Grades 7 and 9. The founding vision was both simple and radical: instead of concentrating the best teachers and resources in already elite institutions, Belmont Academy would provide high-quality facilities and instruction to give every student the opportunity to develop their abilities. This approach directly challenged the traditional 'elite versus non-elite' structure that had long characterized Jamaican secondary education. The school's early mission encompassed a holistic approach to education that went far beyond traditional academics. From the beginning, Belmont Academy emphasized science and technology education, critical thinking and leadership development, civic responsibility and community service, visual and performing arts, and character development. Students were encouraged to participate in clubs, volunteer work, and community activities, reflecting the philosophy that true education encompasses both academic achievement and social development. The transformation that followed was nothing short of remarkable. Despite early challenges—including the fact that about half of the initial students were reading below expected levels—the school experienced rapid growth and improvement. Starting with 200 students, Belmont Academy expanded steadily as new grade levels were added each year, eventually serving between 900 and 1,100 students. More importantly, the school began competing academically with institutions that had existed for over a century, dramatically improving CSEC examination pass rates and climbing national rankings. Today, Belmont Academy stands as proof that the Centre of Excellence experiment succeeded. Serving over 1,000 students and offering comprehensive programmes for CSEC, CAPE, City & Guilds, and NCTVET certifications, the school continues to receive strong community and corporate support. The institution has demonstrated that with the right systems, unwavering commitment, and belief in student potential, educational outcomes can change dramatically, creating opportunities that transform not just individual lives, but entire communities.
